About Belize
Belize is situated South of Mexico and East and North of Guatemala. The country is uniquely nestled between the Central American jungles and the Caribbean Sea, simply put - it offers the best of both worlds. Adventure-seekers can explore ruins of ancient civilizations or visit a few of the numerous protected animals of Belize at one of many national parks, wildlife sanctuaries or reserves.
The pristine cayes that dot the entire length of the country offer sandy, palm-dotted beaches and translucent seas featuring a kaleidoscope of coral, fish, dolphins, turtles and other marine life making scuba diving in Belize like nowhere else in the world. The inner coastal waters are warm and shallow and are sheltered by the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere.
There are only four Atolls in the entire Atlantic Region and Belize is home to three of them (Lighthouse Reef, Glovers Reef and Turneffe Islands).
Belize has a sub-tropical climate with its dry season generally lasting from November through May and its rainy season typically lasting from June to November. Most of the country of Belize is heavily forested inland with unique hardwoods and extraordinary plant life. Belize is lined with mangrove swamps and cayes along its coast with hills and mountains in its interior; the highest point being the great Victoria Peak, which climbs to a zenith of 3,681 feet.
Belize became an independent nation on September 21, 1981. The country is a parliamentary democracy within the British Commonwealth. Its official spoken language is English while Spanish, Creole, Garifuna, and other dialects are also spoken.
The local currency is the Belize dollar. The conversion rate is one U.S. dollar to two Belize dollars. Although Belize benefits greatly from agriculture, aquaculture and manufacturing, tourism is the country’s number one source of employment, investment and income.
Belizeans and foreigners alike can experience Belize from a resident’s standpoint. Belize offers foreign retirees the option to enroll in the Qualified Retired Persons program. This allows a retired foreigner to live in Belize and qualify for many incentives offered by the Government of Belize to live and invest in the country.
Foreigners wishing to work in Belize may obtain a work permit issued through the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Living in Belize is very reasonable compared to other destinations throughout the world. A person can live comfortably in Belize for about $1,500 to $2,000 USD per month and becoming a Belizean citizen is easy. Any person having permanent residency or who is a legal resident for a minimum of five years can apply for Belizean citizenship.
